Obverse description Central field bears the quartered royal arms of Spain — castles of Castile and lions of León in the four quarters, with the Granada pomegranate at the base point — displayed on an ornate shield surmounted by a large royal crown. The assayer initials JM appear to the left of the shield and the denomination numeral 4 to the right. The circular legend, separated by six-petalled rosette stops, reads CAROLUS • III • D • G • HISPAN • ET IND • REX, attributing sovereignty over Spain and the Indies to Charles III.
