Banco Oxandaburu y Garbino was a private commercial bank operating out of Potosí — a city whose silver-mining wealth had already peaked by the 1860s, leaving the region economically marginal relative to Bolivia's emerging financial centers. The bank's note-issuing life was brief, and this 4 Reales Bolivianos denomination is among the scarcer survivors from what was a limited original issue.
The American Bank Note Company's involvement is the one reliably interesting technical fact: ABNC New York plates of this period are identifiable by their distinctive lathe-work guilloche borders, a security feature that Bolivian authorities could not replicate locally.
