Córdoba's provincial coinage persisted well into the 1850s despite the Argentine Confederation's ongoing efforts to rationalize the monetary system across its member provinces. This 4 Reales belongs to a series that Córdoba continued striking largely because the central government lacked the infrastructure — and the political leverage — to enforce uniform coinage. The province operated its own mint with considerable autonomy, and local commerce depended on the continuation of familiar denominations.
By 1852, the defeat of Rosas at Caseros had reshuffled federal arrangements entirely, making this issue a product of an unusually fluid moment in Argentine monetary administration.
