Córdoba's provincial coinage of the early 1850s was issued under the fractured monetary conditions that plagued the Argentine Confederation following Rosas's defeat at Caseros in February 1852. Individual provinces retained the right to coin money, and Córdoba exercised that right aggressively — producing silver of notoriously inconsistent fineness that circulated alongside foreign specie and Buenos Aires issues in an economy with no unified standard. The .750 fineness here is below what most contemporary Spanish-tradition coinages claimed, a concession to provincial silver supplies.
