Córdoba's provincial coinage of the 1840s emerged from a period of profound federal fragmentation in Argentina, when the central government in Buenos Aires had effectively no authority over interior mints. The province operated its own monetary system largely out of necessity — trade with the interior required a local medium, and porteño currency was neither trusted nor reliably available this far inland.

KM#24.1 is distinguished from the closely related 24.2 by its die characteristics. The .750 fineness was a deliberate step below colonial-era standards, a concession to the realities of bullion supply in a landlocked province still dependent on Andean silver circuits.
