Ecuador's early republican coinage was struck at the Quito mint, one of the oldest operating mints in the Americas, originally established by the Spanish Crown in 1575. By the 1840s the facility was struggling — inconsistent silver alloy control and worn dies were chronic problems, and the .666 fineness itself reflected a deliberate debasement from colonial-era standards as the young republic managed chronic fiscal pressure.
KM#27 is scarce in any grade above Fine. Most examples encountered today show heavy circulation wear consistent with extended use in regional trade.
