Aanvullende informatie

Issued under the nominal suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire while Egypt administered Sudan, this piece dates to a period when the Mahdist State had effectively controlled most of the country for nearly a decade. The khedival government in Cairo continued striking coins for Sudan largely as a political assertion — actual circulation in Mahdist-held territories was minimal, and Ottoman-Egyptian coinage was actively rejected in those regions as a symbol of the occupying order.

The plain-border distinction from KM#10.2 reflects a die modification made during the same production run at the Misr (Cairo) mint.
