Obverse description Central device consisting of the Prussian crowned shield bearing the displayed eagle of the Hohenzollern arms, the eagle rendered with spread wings and detailed feathering within a shaped cartouche shield. A royal crown surmounts the shield. The circular legend reading '90 EINEN THALER' arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin capital letters, indicating the coin's fractional value relative to the Thaler. The entire design is contained within a beaded border.

Additional information

Frederick William IV's reign saw Prussia navigating the turbulent path toward German unification, and the 1848 revolution forced him to briefly accept a constitutional role he privately despised. These small copper coins circulated through that upheaval unchanged — the monarchy shaken, the pfennig unremarkable. The multiple catalog references (KM#454 and 454a) reflect a documented composition or die change partway through the issue, distinguishing earlier from later strikes within the same nominal type.
