Obverse description Central field displays the elaborate interlaced cypher of Duke Rudolph August, composed of the intertwined letters R and A beneath a princely crown. The date 1684 is divided by the cypher, with '16' to the left and '84' to the right. The mint mark 'B' for Braunschweig appears below the cypher. The coin is struck on a small, thin flan with a beaded border encircling the design.
