Obverse description Central field features a large cursive royal monogram 'E' for Duke Ernest I, surmounted by a small ducal crown. The monogram is flanked symmetrically on either side by a sprig of laurel, whose branches curve inward toward the base of the letters, framing the design in a classical manner. The overall composition is uncluttered, with the monogram and crown dominating the smooth field against a plain background.
