Honduras issued no regular 4 peso coinage in 1862, making this piece a pattern produced at Tegucigalpa specifically to test denomination and metal viability rather than fulfill any circulating requirement. The Casa Nacional de la Moneda was operating under considerable institutional strain in the early 1860s, with Honduran monetary policy caught between the practical demands of a commodity-scarce economy and the ambitions of a functioning national mint. Bronze was an unusual choice for a peso-denomination pattern in Central America at this date, where silver remained the expected standard.
