The Cuban gold coinage of 1915–16 was authorized under the Ley Monetaria of 1914, Cuba's first independent monetary legislation, passed just over a decade after the Republic's formal establishment. The 4 Peso denomination is peculiar to Cuba — no obvious regional precedent — and appears to have been sized as a fractional convenience between the 2 and 5 Peso values rather than in response to any particular commercial demand.
Mintage across both years was extremely low, struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract. The 1916 issue is the scarcer of the two dates by a meaningful margin.
