| 背面描述 | A right-facing bust portrait of José Martí (1853–1895), Cuban poet and national independence hero, dominates the central field in high relief, rendered in a formal classical style. The curved motto PATRIA Y LIBERTAD arcs along the upper rim. The coin's weight specification 6.6872 G. and fineness 900 M. are inscribed in the left and right fields respectively, flanking the portrait. The date of issue appears in the exergue below the bust. A continuous row of denticles frames the design close to the rim. |

The Cuban gold coinage of 1915–16 was authorized under the Ley Monetaria of 1914, Cuba's first independent monetary legislation, passed just over a decade after the Republic's formal establishment. The 4 Peso denomination is peculiar to Cuba — no obvious regional precedent — and appears to have been sized as a fractional convenience between the 2 and 5 Peso values rather than in response to any particular commercial demand.
Mintage across both years was extremely low, struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract. The 1916 issue is the scarcer of the two dates by a meaningful margin.
