The Manila Mint opened in 1857 as Spain's first overseas mint, established specifically to address the chronic shortage of specie in the Philippine archipelago. Trial pieces from its early years were produced to test dies, adjust equipment, and seek royal approval before committing to gold production. This example in gold-plated copper is almost certainly a die trial rather than a presentation piece — the weight is consistent with a functional press test, not a cabinet specimen.
The 4 Peso denomination itself had a short operational life at Manila, making approved trial material from 1859 exceptionally scarce in any form.
