Paraguay in 1867 was in the third year of the War of the Triple Alliance — the most destructive conflict in Latin American history, which would ultimately kill the majority of Paraguay's adult male population. Pattern coinage from this period reflects Francisco Solano López's increasingly desperate attempts to establish functioning monetary infrastructure while the country was being dismantled around him. The "Charles" designation references the earlier Spanish colonial monetary tradition López was invoking, projecting legitimacy through historical association at a moment when the Paraguayan state was near collapse.
Mayans remains the primary reference for these patterns, most of which never progressed to circulation strikes.
