Additional information

Hogarth, Erichsen and Co. operated as a general merchant and importing house in Sydney during the colonial period, and their decision to issue private silver tokens in 1860 reflects a genuine shortage of small-denomination coinage that plagued New South Wales before the establishment of a reliable imperial supply. Silver merchant tokens of this type are exceptionally scarce survivors — most circulated hard and were redeemed or melted once the currency shortage eased.
