Myanmar's first post-independence coinage, introduced after the country formally separated from the British Commonwealth in January 1948, required establishing an entirely new monetary framework from scratch. The pe denominations of this series were among the first coins struck under the Union of Burma, produced in London at the Royal Mint before domestic minting infrastructure existed.
