| Obverse description | Round cast copper-alloy coin featuring a central square hole (方孔, hōkō) bordered by a raised square rim. Four large Chinese characters in kaisho style are arranged in the four cardinal positions around the central aperture, reading clockwise from the top: 寛 (Kan), 通 (tsū), 永 (ei), 寶 (hō), together forming the legend 'Kan'eitsūhō' (寛永通寶). The characters are bold and deeply cast in relief against a flat field, with a raised outer rim encircling the entire obverse. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays an elaborate pattern of eleven narrow wave-forms (波紋, hamon) radiating outward from the central square hole and filling the entire field in a fan-like, segmented arrangement, creating a distinctive 'bosen' (母銭, master coin) design. The wave motifs are rendered in low but crisp relief, divided into upper and lower registers by the square aperture. Immediately above the central square hole, the katakana character イ (I) is cast in relief, serving as a mint or batch identification mark. A plain raised outer rim borders the reverse field. |
