Obverse description Four Chinese characters in cursive (sōsho) script are arranged symmetrically around the central square hole, reading clockwise as 攵久永寶 (interpreted as 文久永寶, Bunkyūeihō, meaning 'Eternal money of the Bunkyū Era'). Each character occupies one of the cardinal positions relative to the perforation, rendered in a flowing, abbreviated calligraphic style characteristic of late Edo period cast coinage. The field is otherwise plain, and the coin presents a wide, raised rim encircling the design.
