This is a pattern striking — never released for circulation — produced at the Lisbon mint during a period when João V was actively restructuring Portuguese coinage to reflect both the wealth pouring in from Brazilian gold mines and his own ambitions for royal prestige. The 1718 date places it squarely in the experimental phase before the definitive 4 moedas type was settled.
Gomes J5 E3a distinguishes this from related pattern varieties by specific die characteristics. Pattern issues of this reign are genuinely rare; most were struck in tiny numbers for court approval and never saw a second production run.
