Karl of Södermanland had been the effective ruler of Sweden since deposing his nephew Sigismund in 1599, yet he did not formally take the Swedish crown until 1604. These klippe — struck on square or angular planchets rather than round ones — were issued during that liminal period when Karl governed as regent-duke, a constitutional ambiguity he showed little interest in resolving quickly. The format was not decorative whimsy; klippe were often emergency or prestige issues, cut from bar stock when round planchet production was impractical or when a ceremonial weight standard needed to be met quickly.
The Södermanland duchy issues of this window are genuinely short-lived by definition — Karl's coronation as Karl IX ended the duchy's independent issuing authority.
