The king's Latin motto encircles the composition as a peripheral legend outside the beaded circle, reading counterclockwise from the left side of the crown. The crowned monogram is rendered in a bold, baroque style characteristic of mid-17th-century Danish coinage. Decorative stops separate the words of the legend. |

Frederik III's 4 Mark piece was introduced in the immediate aftermath of the 1660–61 constitutional revolution that abolished the elective monarchy and established hereditary absolutism in Denmark. The new coinage was, in part, a deliberate assertion of that changed political order — the motto types in particular were selected to reinforce dynastic permanence rather than merely serve as circulating silver.
The Dav EC II 3581 reference places this squarely within Christian Wermuth's broader cataloguing of the Danish absolutist issues. Type I designation distinguishes the motto placement from a later reworked die, a distinction that matters to specialists but is frequently collapsed in generalist auction descriptions.
