Christian V came to the Danish throne following the 1665 Lex Regia, which codified absolute monarchy in Denmark more explicitly than virtually any other European state — the king ruled by divine right with no constitutional constraint whatsoever. The 4 Mark was the workhorse denomination of late 17th-century Danish commerce, and the thin monogram variant of this type was replaced relatively quickly, giving it a compressed production window across these four years.

The .671 fineness reflects the ongoing debasement pressures that plagued Scandinavian silver coinage following the costly wars with Sweden, particularly the aftermath of the Scanian War of 1675–1679.
