Obverse description Central field depicts a turreted castle with three towers within a multi-lobed (octolobate) inner border, flanked on the left by the Cuenca mintmark (a chalice) and on the right by the assayer's initial. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded outer border. The circumferential legend in Latin reads PHILIPVS · III · D · G · OMNIVM, attributing sovereignty to Philip III by the grace of God. The coin is struck in the hammered tradition, resulting in a characteristically irregular flan with uneven edges.
