By 1663, Castile's copper coinage was in open crisis. Decades of government-sanctioned resealing and revaluation — inflating the face value of existing coins by counterstamping them — had produced a circulating mass of battered, restruck pieces that merchants routinely refused or discounted. This piece comes from that chaotic late phase, when the crown was desperately trying to reconcile copper inflation with a silver shortage that had been grinding on since the 1640s.
Trujillo was a minor mint in Extremadura, active intermittently during this period precisely because central mints couldn't keep pace with demand for small change. Its output is comparatively scarce against Madrid or Segovia production from the same years.
