| Obverse description | Central field displays a large crowned Gothic monogram or cipher, likely representing the interlaced initials of the joint monarchs Charles and Joanna, rendered in bold relief characteristic of mid-16th century colonial hammered coinage. Pellets or small circular ornaments flank the central device, serving as decorative stops within the inner circle. A surrounding circular border separates the central device from the peripheral legend. The flan is irregular and slightly clipped, as is typical of hammered colonial issues, with portions of the circumferential Latin legend visible around the rim. The overall style reflects the crudely struck character common to early New World mint production. |
