Issued in Lesotho's second year of independence, this gold piece was struck as part of the FAO's global coin program — a United Nations initiative launched in the late 1960s to promote food security awareness through commemorative coinage. Dozens of nations participated, but few produced gold issues; most FAO coins were base metal circulating pieces. The gold Lesotho entries occupy a distinctly different tier within that program.
Moshoeshoe I, the 19th-century founder of the Basotho nation, chose the mountain stronghold of Thaba Bosiu as his seat of power — a defensive position that allowed his people to survive Difaqane-era wars and later resist both Boer and British encroachment.
