Obverse description The Maltese national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing the George Cross and a representation of the Maltese flag, supported on either side by two seahorses rampant. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown and rests above a scroll bearing the motto VIRTUTE ET CONSTANTIA. The circular legend REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA runs along the upper periphery in Latin script, and a small dolphin mintmark appears at the bottom of the field.
