John Casper of Ampringen served as Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1664 to 1684, a period when the Order had long ceased to be a crusading military force and functioned primarily as a territorial lordship in the Mergentheim region of Franconia. These small silver kreuzers were struck for actual circulation within that territory, not as ceremonial pieces — the Order maintained mint rights and exercised them pragmatically to supply local commerce.
