| 裏面の説明 | The reverse bears a three-line Latin inscription reading 'SALZB: / LAND- / MINZ' across the central field, indicating the Salzburg territorial mint, with the date '1692.' positioned below in the exergual area. A small ornamental device appears at the top of the field above the legend. The entire design is contained within a plain inner field bordered by a reeded edge, characteristic of milled coinage of the period. |

Johann Ernst von Thun served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1687 until his death in 1709, a tenure defined by ambitious baroque building projects — the completion of Salzburg Cathedral's interior fittings and extensive work on the Mirabel Palace gardens absorbed revenues that pressed the archbishopric's finances throughout the 1690s. Small silver fractional coins like this 4 Kreuzer were the workhorses of everyday commerce in the prince-archbishopric, circulating alongside the more celebrated Talers for which Salzburg's mines supplied the metal.
Zöttl's specialized corpus on Salzburg coinage remains the definitive attribution reference for this series.
