Leonard of Keutschach ruled the Archbishopric of Salzburg from 1495 until his death in 1519, presiding over a period of significant monetary reform in the Alpine region. This piedfort — struck at roughly double the normal flan thickness — was almost certainly produced as a presentation or test piece rather than for circulation, a practice the Salzburg mint employed selectively for senior ecclesiastical and secular recipients.
The Batzen denomination itself was a relatively recent innovation at the time of striking, having emerged from Swiss confederate minting conventions in the 1490s.
