Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg was no typical prince-bishop — a humanist, a diplomat, and a survivor of genuine political violence, he faced a full-scale peasant uprising in 1523 that besieged Salzburg itself, forcing him to take refuge in the Hohensalzburg fortress for months. The coins struck across his archiepiscopate exist against that backdrop of acute civil instability, and some issues within the Zöttl 262–269 range are accordingly scarce in high grades, having seen hard circulation during a period when Salzburg's monetary output was disrupted by the revolt.
