| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents the denomination in three lines across the central field: the numeral '4' at the top, followed by 'ЧЕТЫРЕ' (four) on the second line, and 'КОПѢЙКИ' (kopecks) on the third line, all rendered in bold incuse Cyrillic lettering. A double horizontal rule separates the denomination from the date '1796', which is positioned in the lower exergue. The design is plain and typographic in character, with no additional decorative elements, the milled border providing the sole peripheral embellishment. |

Novodels — official restrike specimens produced by the St. Petersburg and Moscow mints primarily for collectors and foreign dignitaries — occupy an awkward but fascinating corner of Russian numismatics. This 1796 copper issue was almost certainly struck after Catherine's death in November of that year, almost definitively placing production under Paul I, who both authorized novodels and moved aggressively to dismantle his mother's coinage system. The multiple Bitkin references here reflect genuine die variation across restrike sessions rather than a single production run.
