Lucerne's civic gold coinage of the sixteenth century was produced under tight cantonal authority, with the city's mint operating intermittently rather than continuously — output was driven by trade demand rather than political display. The 4 Goldgulden denomination placed this squarely in merchant circulation, moving across Alpine routes where Rhenish and Italian gold coinage competed directly with Swiss civic issues.
Saint Leodegar, martyred Bishop of Autun in 679 AD, had been Lucerne's patron since the city's foundational connection to his relics at the priory of St. Leodegar. His presence on gold coinage carried genuine civic weight — not ceremonial habit.
