Beschrijving keerzijde Central device comprising the Royal Arms of Cambodia: a tiered prasat (royal pavilion) surmounted by radiating sunbeams, flanked by two crossed spears and decorative scrollwork. The pavilion rests upon an ornate shield enclosed within a laurel wreath, with a star at the base. Khmer script legend arcs around the upper field on both sides of the central device. The French denomination legend QUATRE FRANCS curves along the lower field, punctuated by raised dots at either side. The whole is enclosed within a finely dentilated border.

Aanvullende informatie

The 1860 Cambodian coinage project was initiated under French pressure as the protectorate relationship was being formalized — France would not officially establish its protectorate over Cambodia until 1863, but monetary standardization efforts preceded the political arrangement. These essai pieces were struck in Paris as pattern proposals, and the 4 Francs denomination was never adopted for circulation. Norodom I had only recently consolidated his claim to the throne following a succession dispute with his brother Sisowath, a rivalry that would persist for decades.
