Ghazi I died in April 1939 under circumstances that remain disputed — the official account of a car accident was widely disbelieved by the Iraqi public, and suspicions of British involvement circulated immediately. Coins bearing his name were already in production when he died, making this one of the last issues struck under his brief, turbulent reign.
