Marija Jurić Zagorka, born 1873, was the first professional female journalist in Croatia and remains one of the most widely read Croatian authors of the 20th century. Her serialized historical novels — particularly the Grička vještica cycle — were routinely dismissed by the Zagreb literary establishment during her lifetime as lowbrow popular fiction, a judgment that did nothing to reduce their enormous readership. She funded much of her own work and fought the editorial hierarchies of the Croatian press for decades.
The 4 euro denomination places this squarely within Croatia's post-2023 eurozone transition commemorative program.
