The Halubje bell ringers — known locally as the Zvončari — are a Carnival tradition from the Kastav region near Rijeka, recognized by UNESCO in 2009 as an element of intangible cultural heritage. Troupes of men wearing sheepskins and large cowbells move through villages in the days before Lent, the noise intended to drive away winter and evil spirits. The practice predates written records of the region.
