The Puretić Power Block — more commonly called the "purse seine power block" — was invented by the Croatian-American fisherman Mario Puretić in the early 1950s and patented in 1953. The hydraulic pulley mechanism revolutionized commercial fishing by automating the hauling of heavy seine nets, reducing crew requirements and dramatically increasing catch capacity. Its adoption spread globally within a decade, making it one of the most consequential pieces of fishing technology of the twentieth century.
