| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field occupied by the quartered Royal Arms of Spain under Philip II, displayed within a crowned shield. The quarters show the castles of Castile and the lions of León in saltire, with the escutcheon of Granada at the base and the arms of Austria-Burgundy and other territories incorporated in the flanking divisions. The crown surmounting the shield is rendered in high relief characteristic of hammered coinage. A partial Latin legend encircles the shield, reading PHILIPPVS · D · G · OMNIVM, with the irregular flan causing portions of the legend to fall off the struck surface. The overall style is consistent with late sixteenth-century Spanish escudo coinage produced at the Segovia and Granada mints. |
