Charles I of Spain — the same Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire — rarely set foot in Valencia after his early years, yet the kingdom retained its own mint and coinage rights under the Crown of Aragon's traditional privileges. This four-escudo piece belongs to a short production window tied directly to his abdication process; by 1556 he had surrendered his Spanish crowns to Philip II and retired to the monastery of Yuste.
Calicó's listing as Cal#3 places this among the premier rarities of the Valencian gold series. Surviving examples are exceptionally few.
