Carlos III came to the Spanish throne in 1759 having already ruled Naples and Sicily for over two decades, bringing with him Bourbon reformist instincts that would eventually reshape colonial taxation and trigger the very rebellions his successors couldn't contain. The Madrid mint's 1761 gold issues fall early in his reign, before those tensions surfaced.
The Madrid facility used the "M" mint mark with an assayer initial — for this period, José Sáenz de Santamaría held the post. Cal#296 places this squarely in the milled coinage series introduced under Felipe V, which displaced the old cob (macuquina) tradition across Spanish mints through the 1730s–40s.
