Carlos II died in November 1700 without an heir, triggering the War of the Spanish Succession and effectively ending the Habsburg grip on Spain. Coins struck in his name during 1699–1700 represent the final gasps of that dynasty's Iberian mint output — the Seville facility would continue operating under Bourbon administration within years, but the political rupture was total.
The Seville mint's cob-era gold escudo production had long been plagued by inconsistent planchet preparation, and four-escudo pieces from this period frequently show weak areas attributable to inadequate flan rolling rather than die failure — a distinction worth making when assessing individual specimens.
