Tortuga Island has no functioning mint, no indigenous coinage tradition, and a current population small enough to fit in a modest auditorium. The "4 Escalins" is a privately commissioned collector issue exploiting the island's name recognition as a one-time pirate haven — the escalin itself was a colonial-era small silver coin used across the French Caribbean, long obsolete by any practical measure. No circulation ever occurred or was intended.
