Obverse description A parrot (the so-called 'Papegaaitje') depicted in profile facing right, perched on a leafy branch bearing four leaves, the whole resting on a ground line. The numeral '4' appears in the upper right field. The date 1679 is inscribed in the exergue below the ground line, preceded by the letters 'AM' denoting Anno Mundi. The design is crudely executed in the hammered tradition, with irregular coin surfaces typical of early colonial Surinamese coinage.
