Aanvullende informatie

John Philip of Greiffenklau zu Vollraths served as Prince-Bishop of Würzburg from 1699 until his death in 1719, and this heavy four-ducat piece was struck in the final full year of his reign. Multiple-ducat presentation strikes of this type were not intended for ordinary circulation — they functioned as diplomatic gifts and court largesse, distributed at ceremonies, chapter meetings, or to mark imperial favors. The Franconian episcopate had strong incentive to produce visually impressive gold at this scale, as Würzburg's prince-bishops held both secular and ecclesiastical authority and competed for prestige with neighboring secular courts.

The .986 fineness places this well above the standard trade ducat specification, suggesting it was struck to a premium standard appropriate for presentation use.
