Bocskai struck these large gold multiples during his anti-Habsburg uprising of 1604–1606, a conflict that forced the Peace of Vienna in June 1606 — one of the few instances where the Habsburgs formally conceded religious freedoms to Hungarian Protestants. The coins functioned partly as political instruments, circulated among Bocskai's noble supporters to demonstrate the legitimacy of a rival court issuing its own currency from Transylvanian mints.
Bocskai died in December 1606, just months after the peace was signed, under circumstances suspicious enough that contemporaries blamed poison.
