Obverse description The Basel basilisk, the legendary heraldic creature of the city, is depicted in high relief at centre, shown in profile facing left with spread wings and a scaled, serpentine body. The basilisk stands beside and clutches the city's ornate shield, which bears the traditional black crozier (bishop's staff) of Basel on a white field. A fine beaded border frames the design. The circular Latin legend DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace) runs along the periphery in raised capital letters.
