4 Ducats - Georg III, Ludwig IV and Christian

Georg III, Ludwig IV, and Christian were the three surviving Piast dukes of Liegnitz-Brieg-Wohlau, ruling jointly under the terms of their inheritance arrangement after the death of their father Georg Rudolf in 1653. The three-portrait multiple-ducat format served a deliberate dynastic function: asserting the continued vitality of the Piast line in Silesia at a moment when Habsburg pressure to absorb the duchy on extinction of the male line was already intensifying. The Habsburgs would succeed within a generation — Christian died without issue in 1672, ending the line.
