Reverse description A large quartered royal shield of Castile and León — displaying alternating castles and lions in four quarters with a pomegranate at the base — displayed on the outstretched wings and body of a displayed imperial eagle, whose heads flank the escutcheon on either side. The eagle's plumage is rendered in fine hammered detail across the broad flan. The circumferential legend SVB:VMBRA:ALARVM:TVARVM:PROTEGE:NOS (Under the shadow of Thy wings protect us) encircles the design within a beaded border, referencing the biblical Psalm as a motto of the Catholic Monarchs.
